Mystery

Mystery   6 x 6 inches, Oil Pastel on Linen

There is a church in Chimayo where the dirt below the sanctuary is supposed to have magic healing powers. It is a pilgrimage destination at Easter and artists flock there to paint the old wooden church. As I worked on this painting, something about it reminded me of that place. That is the reason for the cross. This painting became more literal than others, but I like it a lot and had a great time watching it evolve through the afternoon painting session. Mystery refers to the process and the place. I did not think about Chimayo until the painting was almost finished and told me what it was about. I love these kind of surprise endings.
